The full moon that occurs every month has different names in many different cultures. The names were applied to each event's entire month. The Algonquin tribes from New England onward west to Lake Superior used the same names for the moon, with a few minor variations. European immigrants adopted their own traditions and came up with some of their own names. The names of full moons frequently reflect the season; for example, a Harvest Moon takes place at the conclusion of the growing period in September or October, and a Cold Moon occurs in a wintery December. In the Northern Hemisphere, at least, that is how things operate. The Harvest Moon happens in March in the Southern Hemisphere, where the weather are reversed, and the Cold Moon takes place in June.
