National holidays in Japan are established in accordance with 1948 law that provides guidelines on public holidays. Japan has 16 national holidays held every year. A holiday that falls on a Sunday dictates that the following day which is Monday turned to a holiday too. Government services are not offered during holidays and schools as well as most businesses remain closed.
The Japanese people observe two major religions. They are Buddhism and Shinto. Shinto is based on Japanese culture while Buddhism is a foreign religion though practices by a big number of people. Religious holidays are mostly based on these two religions. Buddhists celebrate Vesak which is the major festivals of the year. The celebration is observed to commemorate Buddha's birthday.
New Year celebration is the major public holiday that is celebrated in Japan. On the eve of the New Year, Japanese citizens hold celebrations marked with numerous events till the morning of the New Year. The day starts with viewing the New Year’s first sunrise which is traditionally believed to be the representative of the just started year.
National Foundation day is observed to commemorate the day Japan became a nation. Cultural festivities and military shows mark the holiday. Constitution Memorial Day is the day observed in remembrance of the day the constitution of Japan became an enforcer of the law.
One of the unique holidays by the Japanese people is called coming of age. On this day the young men and women who are 20 years of age are considered adults. Other exciting Japanese holidays include Showa day, Vernal Equinox Day, greenery day and many others.
