Venezuela celebrates 44 holidays in a year. Out of these holidays, 17 are public holidays that are celebrated and recognized by the government. The government, banks, and offices are closed for the rest of the holidays. The Ministry of Labor regulates the public holidays. Under Article 185 of the labor code, the government has the power to declare or call off a public holiday. Currently, the government is determined to improve the country’s economy by increasing the workdays.
The country has a strong Catholic influence that leads to many public holidays such as Christmas day. Other observances included in the formation of these holidays are politics and historical events. Each village has its saints that are celebrated during these public holidays. During these public holidays, residents take their vacations, family gathering, and spend time at the different entertainment joints in the country. Getting accommodation can be hard, as many people and visitors prefer visiting the country during this time. Getting supplies can also be expensive as prices go up.
Workers are required to take a day off during each of the public holidays in a year. These holidays are paid as per the employment contract. The employer compensates workers who have to report to work and given an extra day off. Holidays that occur on weekends are celebrated on that particular day and are not pushed to a future date.
