2020 Public Holidays Sweden Service

The above is the list of 2020 public holidays declared in Sweden which includes federal, regional government holidays and popular observances. We also provide Sweden holiday calendar for 2020 in Word, Excel, PDF and printable online formats.

Sweden has 20 public holidays. The government through the Act of parliament regulates public holidays, salaries, vacations, and employment. The counties and municipalities can opt to add extra public holidays from the general list. These extra holidays are referred to as ‘de facto ’and ‘seasonal observances.’ The ‘de facto holidays’ can be taken by an employee who is not in that municipality under the discretion and agreement of the employer. Under the nation’s laws, the public holidays that occur on the weekend cannot be moved to another day. Only Ascension Day is given the pass on this law. On specific holidays such as Ascension, the days that follow are taken as extra holidays. In prints, these public holidays are indicated on calendars with the red color; as a result, many people refer to them as red days.

The population is comprised of 90 percent Christians and 10 percent a mixture of Muslims and Indians. The categorization of these holidays is divided into Christians and non-Christians observances. The public strictly recognizes and embraces these public holidays. Their commitment and devotion are revealed through the colorful decoration and activities present in the streets.

The business life trickles down during these public holidays. Most of them close at noon of the previous day. The employees are given time off by their employers on holidays that come on weekdays. They refer to this as 'squeeze day.'
