2023 Public Holidays Iran Service

The above is the list of 2023 public holidays declared in Iran which includes federal, regional government holidays and popular observances. We also provide Iran holiday calendar for 2023 in Word, Excel, PDF and printable online formats.

Iran has 26 holidays, making it one of the countries with the most public holidays in the world. The holiday commemorates religious or national events. Iranians use three official calendars to mark their holidays. These calendars are the solar Hijri calendar, which is the main national calendar, the Gregorian calendar which is used to mark national events and the Christian holidays while the Islamic followers use the lunar calendar.

During public holidays, government offices and most businesses are closed. But most small businesses open at noon. Transport is not affected during the holidays. Employers allow time off for their employees during the public holiday. If the holiday falls to a Thursday or Tuesday, the government directs that the celebrations be held on Friday and Monday, respectively.

The Muslim religion is dominant in Iran. For this reason, most of the religious holidays are based on Muslim beliefs. Religious holidays follow the lunar calendar. The most celebrated Muslim holiday is the month of Ramadan (Ramazan). During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to evening. They are not allowed to take anything, including water. Eid ul Fitr is also one of the widely Muslim celebrated holidays in Iran.

National holidays are marked as critical events in Iran. Nouroz (new year) is the most important holiday in Iran. The celebration preparations begin two weeks before the holiday. During the holiday, people dress in different cultural costumes. Dance, songs, and festivities mark the celebrations. During this day, people get time to visit friends or have picnics. The day is seen as the foundation of peace and cohesion between the citizens.
