On public holidays, government offices, schools and businesses are closed. The employees are entitled to a paid day off during public holidays by the organization they are working for at the time. However, there is an exception for the employees who have not worked for their employers for at least 40 hours in 5 weeks. Where the public holiday falls in a weekend, it is observed as a day off on the next weekday.
The Christian religion is dominant in the Republic of Ireland. Majority of religious holidays are hence based on Christian beliefs. Christmas day is the most celebrated holiday; operations are closed including businesses. Celebrations start on the eve of the day through concerts, songs and reading Biblical stories about the birth of Jesus. During Christmas day Christians either congregate in churches for services or have a picnic with families.
Easter celebrations are marked as a public holiday too. However, Good Friday is not recognized as an official public holiday.
