Oman has 15 holidays in a year. Each year, the government announces the list of public holidays for the next year. In Oman, the New Year is not recognized as a public holiday. Even though it being a working day, most of the people get an off day to celebrate the holiday. When any holiday date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following day automatically becomes a holiday. The public holiday’s dates are prone to change as they are based on the signing of the moon. Religion and democracy influence the nation's public holidays. Oman is one of the oldest independent states, and as a result, the society clings firmly to its beliefs, culture, and norms. The holidays are celebrated different depending on their nature. Families go to the mosque to pray while on other holidays they fast.
Fridays and Saturdays are weekends where both the public and private sector give the workers time off. if any worker do not take time off from work on these public holidays are compensated for the day they have worked and given an extra day off. The government has the power to alter or prolong a holiday when the situation calls for it. Aside from religion, Oman public holidays are influenced and observed by social affairs, a democracy such as the public holiday for Independence Day. There are public holidays that go for one day and those that can go for up to two weeks. During these festivals, the society celebrates by holding feasts.
