In Ukraine, public holidays are called national holidays. Most of the holidays are influenced by strong cultural traditions and the Orthodox religion. Ukraine observes nine public holidays every year. The workers get three days off for the Orthodox holiday. The holidays go for two days, and the other exceeds to three days. The same privileges are given to the workers who observe the national and regional celebrations.
If the holiday occurs on weekends, the following Monday becomes a holiday. When such a holiday falls on a day that was scheduled as a day off for workers, they are obliged by the law to take the following day off. When certain professions report to work on these holidays such doctors, they are compensated for that day and allowed to take an extra day off the following week. The public holidays are celebrated differently. On some occasions, the community goes to the streets with traditional colorful clothing making it an outdoor event commemorating their saints, while on others, the activities and celebrations are done indoors.
The business is slow on public days but not closed down completely since a majority of them open for half the day. The transportation is affected as many people come out mostly heading to the same place. Therefore, it’s advisable that you plan your schedule in advance to avoid inconveniences during the holiday.
The country’s rich culture and heritage draw many tourists to visit Ukraine during holidays. Hotels and air travel are fully booked. They also hike prices and so it’s better advised that travelers make prior arrangements.
