The Republic of Croatia has about 14 national holidays each year. The commonest religion in Croatia is Roman Catholic, making the majority of public holidays to be based on Catholic observances, followed by Croatian cultural traditions.

The citizens of the Republic who celebrate different religious holidays are allowed to work on such days of the year. That entails Christians who celebrate Christmas on January 7th in keeping with the Julian calendar, Muslims in the days of Ramadan Bayram and Kurban Bayram, and Jews on the days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The unofficial holidays marked in the country include Carnival celebrations that are made in most cities and towns on Shrove Tuesday (Pokladni utorak). Some towns have de facto public holidays that they mark as patron saints' feast days. A significant number of Croatians are in the shipbuilding, information technology, and tourism sectors. A majority of them are in trade unions, and hence subject to either employment contracts or union bargaining arrangements. Paid holidays are generally set in such pacts.

Public holidays in the country are overseen by the Holidays, Memorial Days and Non-Working Days Act. All workers are entitled to fourteen paid national holidays per year. However, should a worker be needed at work on a national holiday or an official non-working day—determined by Croatia’s labor laws— the amount of pay on annual leave may be added.
