There are several public holidays in Kuwait. Most of these holidays are centered on the Muslim religion and those that mark the independence days. During public holidays the government offices and businesses are closed, and workers are entitled a paid day off.
Kuwait is a Muslim dominated country. Most of the religious celebrations are therefore based on Islamic beliefs. Ramadan is held and observed according to the Islamic religion across the country. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during this holy month. Eid el-Fitr is the most celebrated day as it marks the end of Ramadan. It is marked with celebrations of different kinds, including giving out gifts, feasting, and visiting each other.
Eid el-Adha is celebrated in remembrance of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his only son. It is marked by offering lambs for scarifies offered to Allah. Islamic religion uses the lunar calendar to mark the dates of their holidays. The New Year celebrations are held in the first month of Muharram (October, November, or December) depending on the Muslim calendar.
Like many other nations, Kuwait celebrates New Year from the Gregorian calendar. It is marked with special events happening all over the country.
National holidays are also crucial in Kuwait. Liberation day is held in remembrance of Kuwait's liberation from the Desert storm at the end of the first gulf war. The National Day is Kuwait's most celebrated holiday. Kuwait citizens celebrate it to commemorate the end of Ottoman rule and the country's transformation to freedom.
