Austria is a landlocked country with over 8.7 million population. There are 16 public holidays in this country, the most important of them being Christmas. The Austrian calendar might look a little different for those who are not citizens of the country because their celebrations for religious holidays are taken very seriously.
In Austria, public holidays vary depending on which part of the country you're at the moment. Therefore, it’s mandatory for you to know when public offices will be closing so that you are not inconvenienced by the holidays. It's compulsory for everyone to take time off for most of these holidays. But the good news is that if a holiday falls on a weekend, there's no carrying it off to the next working day, this simplifies a complicated holiday calendar.
In Austria, government offices, banks, schools, and most retail stores close on public holidays. Some businesses, however, remain open offering clients’ discounts to celebrate the holidays. On employees are not be given any penalty for not going to work. Instead, they are paid for time off like any other regular working day. But public holidays that fall on a day of rest like Sunday is not paid. On public holidays, the government does not make any kind of official duties including deploying troops or even making any military move.
Some public holidays are however exclusive to particular federal states in Austria. When these states are observing their unique holidays, other regions go about their business as usual.
