A vast majority of holidays in the Republic of Honduras are based on the essential Christian religion locally: Roman Catholicism. That is in addition to the historical, political, and cultural celebrations. In Honduras, they celebrate holidays, including New Year’s Day and the Christian Easter Holy Week from Maundy Thursday, as they mark the beginning of Lent. The Holy Week ordinarily runs for a length of three or four days, coming to a close on Easter Sunday. Not all employers give Easter Monday off to employees as a paid holiday.
Every celebration in most families is of importance in the entire land of Honduras. The special days are customarily enjoyed with the members of the extended family and friends. In some of the most important days of the year including Independence Day and holy week, the celebration is done in such a way that parades and displays are conducted from as early as daybreak to the afternoon or late in the evening.
Lots of festivities occur in a Honduran year. They honor a lot of events and persons, including a long list of saints. Almost every city, town, or local area in the country has a patron saint and commemorates the yearly festival for their benefactor. Some may not be recognized nationally. For instance, on April 12, the people remember the arrival of the Garifuna people in Honduran land. It is a joyous day embraced by the Garifuna communities, with parties and merriment. Such local parties are as filled with fun and joy as the national ones.
