2023 Public Holidays New Zealand Service
The above is the list of 2023 public holidays declared in New Zealand which includes federal, regional government holidays and popular observances. We also provide New Zealand holiday calendar for 2023 in Word, Excel, PDF and printable online formats.
New Zealand public holidays revolve on a variety of cultural, national, and religious beliefs. The holidays are categorized into national, statutory, and provincial anniversary days. Workers get up to 20 annual holidays, eleven of them being official holidays. During public holidays, workers are given paid day offs. Government offices and businesses are closed on these days.
New Zealand is a Christian dominated country. Most of the religious holidays are therefore based on Christianity. Easter celebration is among the celebrated holy days that Christians celebrate. Christians observe this day by helping the poor, visiting the sick, and having festivals. Christmas day is the main event that Christians celebrate. The celebrations are marked by singing and dancing along the streets from the eve of the day until the D-day.
New Zealand celebrates several public holidays including the ANZAC Day which commemorates citizens who lost their lives fighting the war for peacekeeping.
Waitangi day is the most celebrated public holiday in New Zealand. The celebrations are held in remembrance of the signing of Waitangi treaty in 1840. The treaty made New Zealand part of British Empire and gave Maori people the rights to their land. It also stated that same human rights as British must be subject to the New Zealand natives.
The day is graced by the Maori cultural songs, dances, and military parade. Government personnel and other invited dignitaries make speeches during national holidays. The celebrations happen across New Zealand. People celebrate with festivities of different kinds while others use the day for picnics.
