Belgium public holidays are categorized into three; banks holidays, national holidays and public holidays. There are twenty-three holidays in Belgium, but twelve are official holidays. Two of these official holidays fall on a Sunday, Easter Sunday and whit Sunday. The remaining 10 public holidays are celebrated in accordance with the laws that govern public holidays in Belgium.
During these holidays, many businesses are closed, and workers are given a paid day off. However, if the holiday falls on a weekend either Sunday or Saturday, the holiday is not moved to any other day of the week, and this makes the number of days off subject to change.
Belgium government gives banks a mandate to hold bank holidays annually. For the holidays that fall on a Thursday or Tuesday, the institutions can decide to give its workers a holiday on Friday and Monday to make the weekend longer.
The most celebrated national holiday in Belgium is the Belgium national day. It is marked by traditional cultural shows, military mighty shows, and classical music concerts. During this day the prime minister commemorates the end of the world war, the five-year reign of HM King Philippe. The day is a source of cohesion amongst the Belgian citizens.
All Belgium holidays are celebrated nationwide except the public holidays. There are three public holidays observed by three language communities. The language communities are the Dutch-speaking Flanders the German-speaking provinces and the French-speaking Wallonia. The day is marked mostly by celebration based on different cultures.
