Spain has two sets of holidays; the national and regional holidays. Each municipality has 13 public holidays per year. The country has a rich and vibrant culture that draws millions of tourists all year round. The public holidays and the regional holidays are different. The latter is set and decided by the local government. The holidays are a lonely time for the streets as businesses, offices, government and banks institutions close down. A public holiday that occurs on a weekday forces the staff to take a bridge holiday (‘Puente’). This bridge holiday goes for four days. Only for bank holidays that occur during the weekends can be moved to a weekday of the following week. The decision is left to the regional government and is not universally recognized in the country.

The public holidays have festivals, where the locals wear colorful clothes and embrace their Spanish foods. The public holidays are famously known globally, and the tourist numbers increase causing the rise in hotels which often get fully booked. The list of public holidays is published each October indicating the holidays for the following year. The holidays are influenced by religion, social affairs, and culture.

Employers are mandated by the law to offer a free paid day off to celebrate the public holidays. Those whose work cannot allow them to stops working are given extra pay on that day and allowed to take an extra paid weekday off. Some holidays are short taking two or one days whereas others can be a week-long celebration.
