What is Pioneer Day?
In the mid-1840s, Brigham Young led the Mormon saints from Nauvoo Illinois, where they had been evicted and their religious leader, Joseph Smith, murdered. They went west seeking refuge and an isolated land where they could practice their religion and hence be free from religious prosecution. Their trek was full of hardships as they crossed the plains and went over the Rocky Mountains. Many of them died of diseases, but about 2000 of them managed to get to Utah safely. They soon started farming, built a dam, and soon, it became the promised land. A day was set aside as a holiday as a means to honor the arrival of pioneers in Utah.
