2023 Public Holidays Puerto Rico Service
The above is the list of 2023 public holidays declared in Puerto Rico which includes federal, regional government holidays and popular observances. We also provide Puerto Rico holiday calendar for 2023 in Word, Excel, PDF and printable online formats.
Puerto Rico is considered a member of the U.S Commonwealth, and this implies that similar to the United States, it acknowledges the traditional holidays that America has in addition to the few that it recognizes. It has 20 holidays in total. All these holidays are regulated by the “Law Regulating the Operations of Commercial Establishments” in the country. In this law, the government recognizes eight holidays as the only paid holidays that affect the general public. The other holidays affect the government and bank employees as they are the only two groups that get paid. On any national holiday, all the government offices and banks remain closed.
The laws in the Puerto Rico affirms that workers are entitled to a paid day off to celebrate a holiday that relates to the public. Those who work on national holidays due to the nature of their work; are entitled to a premium wage set to that specific day. The law offers the government a onetime chance to announce a holiday for a national event. An example of these holidays include days created for hurricane cleanups and elections. Employees are not paid for these national holidays.
Other holidays that are celebrated despite them not being holidays include Carnivals and the last days before Ash Wednesday. The business life dims down during these holidays. The government does not mandate any business to volunteer or participate in the celebrations of the Carnival. Participants who join from the public do so voluntarily. The culture is diverse owing to the migration of different cultures in the country.
