The United States has ten public holidays. These are common holidays recognized throughout the country. Other holidays are recognized in individual regions and thus referred to as regional holidays. When a public holiday occurs on Saturdays, the previous day automatically becomes a holiday. A holiday that falls on Sundays is pushed to the coming Monday. Different from public holidays, the state holidays are strictly for the public sector and the government officials. Some of the organizations might choose or deny giving their employees a day off during these Federal holidays.
The bank holidays are similar to Federal holidays. Most of the public holidays are influenced by culture, religions and special events in the history of the United States. The holidays are recognized and published by the Federal government. Most employees prefer to have an employment contract stipulating their allowances, vacation days and holidays packages respectively. Small retail shops would not offer such but would allow free day on these holidays. When one is obliged by his roles to work during these public holidays, the law dictates that they are compensated and/or offered a free paid day off in the coming week. Different organizations also embrace these holidays and take up the holiday theme. Some holidays can be a day long while others can go for a week.
Most businesses close down during major holidays. On certain federal holidays, the streets are full of people and traffic comes to a standstill as the celebrations begin. Different holidays call for different response and observations. During these federal holidays, retails stores capitalize significantly on sales of different costumes and merchandises.
